In June 2022, Health Partners Plans shared its requirement for therapy providers to use the prescribing physician NPI as the requesting provider when submitting prior authorization (initial and continued care) requests to eviCore healthcare for the following services:

• Occupational therapy
• Physical therapy
• Speech language therapy
• Chiropractor services

Health Partners Plans and eviCore have changed the process for submitting prior auth requests for certain therapy services. The previous communication noted that the NPI used must be that of a Medical Doctor (MD) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Effective March 30, 2023, we allow for the use of Physician Assistants (PA), Nurse Practitioners (NP) and licensed practitioners within the scope of their practice under state law.

Since this date, eviCore has been working to update the provider portal to allow for the submission of therapy authorizations ordered by an NP, PA or other licensed practitioner. While this effort continues, all authorization requests for these therapies ordered by an NP, PA or other licensed practitioner can be requested telephonically. We will share a follow-up communication once the provider portal has been updated.
